コーネル大学の発達心理学者ステファン・セシー教授によると、過去数十年
の間にIQ（知能指数）の平均値が20ポイントも向上しているそうだ。この
現象は、日本、米国、英国、南ア、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなど、
10数カ国で確認されているらしい。

仮に50年前に日本で行われたＩＱテストの平均値を現代のＩＱテストの平均値
として適用したとしよう。すると、被験者のなんと90パーセント以上が天才
と診断されてしまう。逆に、50年前にＩＱテストを受けた人たちがタイム
マシンに乗って現代にやってきてＩＱテストを受けたとすると、ほとんどは
「愚鈍」と判定されることになる。

栄養と食事がＩＱの急上昇に大きく寄与しているのではないかとして、
新たな調査が行われている。これまでに行われた研究でも、鉄と亜鉛の
摂取量が適度なレベルにあることがＩＱを向上させたとする説や、魚に
含まれるオメガ３脂肪酸（ＤＨＡ、ＥＰＡ、α―リノレイン酸の総称）が
脳の神経伝達機能を高めたのだとする説などが唱えられている。
